Improving Safety & Strategy on the 17th Hole

Since the course opened in 1996, the 2nd and 17th holes have occasionally been… lively!

Last summer, I spent time observing play in that area (yes — deckchair and clipboard included). Here’s what I found:

  • 273 golfers observed playing either the 2nd or 17th

  • 61 golfers played their second shot from the opposing fairway

That’s a significant number — and it’s not about golfing ability. It’s about the way the 17th hole has naturally encouraged players to favour the left side, often towards the 2nd fairway.

With factors such as the central oak tree, tee alignment (particularly from the back tees), fairway slope, and out of bounds right, the hole has unintentionally directed traffic into a shared landing area — creating a safety concern.

The Opportunity for Change

Following the removal of the large tree to the right of the fairway (which was unfortunately dead and posed a safety risk near the power lines), we now have the opportunity to reshape the hole for the better.

The New Vision for the 17th

  • The fairway will increase from 32 yards to 48 yards wide (a 50% increase)

  • It will be relocated to the right, between the oak tree and the out of bounds

  • The hole will play more as a true dogleg, directing traffic safely away from the 2nd hole

To ensure the hole remains fair and playable:

  • A ditch will run along the right-hand side, with out of bounds beyond it

  • Errant shots right will more likely find a penalty area (one stroke) rather than out of bounds (stroke and distance)

In addition, new tee boxes will be introduced over the coming years, positioned closer to the path as you cross from the 16th. This will create a stronger dogleg angle and a more visually striking tee shot towards the tree line.

A Phased Five-Year Plan

This is a substantial project and will be delivered in stages over five years:

  1. Irrigation installation

  2. Fescue generation to create a split fairway

  3. Tree planting along the left-hand side

  4. Construction of the drainage ditch

  5. Building new tee boxes

This redesign is about two things: safety and improved course strategy. We’re confident it will enhance both the playability and character of the 17th for years to come.

We look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses.

Happy Golfing ⛳
