At Harleyford Golf Club, we are exploring the possibility of launching a 'Fore' Get Me Not Golf Café – a dementia-friendly golf initiative designed to bring together people living with dementia, their carers and volunteers in a relaxed, welcoming and supportive environment.
Using simple golf activities, conversation and refreshments, the programme aims to encourage social interaction, improve wellbeing and, most importantly, provide an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Sadly, dementia has touched the Harleyford family, with a number of past members having been affected by the condition. We'd love to explore whether our club could play a small part in supporting others in our local community who are living with dementia.
Before we take the next step, we'd like to understand whether there is enough interest from members who would be willing to volunteer. You certainly don't need to be a golf professional or have previous experience of dementia—just be friendly, patient and willing to give a little of your time.
The expected commitment would be around one three-hour session each month, with full dementia awareness training and guidance provided before any sessions begin.
If you feel this is something you would like to be involved with, or if you'd simply like to find out more before expressing an interest, please get in touch with Jack Slade by emailing jack@harleyfordgolf.co.uk.
With enough support from our members, we hope Harleyford Golf Club can establish a programme that not only introduces people to golf but also provides friendship, companionship and meaningful social interaction for those living with dementia and the people who care for them.
Together, we have the opportunity to make a genuine difference within our local community.
