Club Newsletter - December 2019
Dear Member,
Thank goodness the rain has ceased up for a few days. Despite it being cold, I hope you are all taking the opportunity to come and play some winter golf. I have a few bits of information to bring to your attention this month.
Captains
As you should all now be aware we the Club Captains' have changed for the coming year:
- Lee Lawrence has replaced Bob Welfare-Ford as Men's Captain,
- A group of four ladies, Lyndsey Carter, Nerys McGuinness, Brenda Hanna & Helen Gyselynck have replaced Lyndsey as Ladies Captain,
- Lee Dawson remains as our Seniors Captain,
I'm sure you will all take the opportunity to wish all of our Captains the best of luck with their upcoming year and a say a massive thank you to Bob & Lyndsey for a fantastic job they did during their tenure.
Christmas
Now 'tis the season', there are few points to be aware of:
- Staff Christmas Fund - There is a box on the bar for the Staff Christmas Fund. This gets split between the whole of the Harleyford team for their hard work and dedication that they give to the Club throughout the year. Any donations are gratefully received.
- Opening Hours - From Christmas Eve, the opening hours will change very slightly due to the festive season. The only day we will be closed is Christmas Day but please keep an eye out for the time changes.
- Pro-Shop Draw - With some amazing prizes up for grabs, please make sure you purchase your square on the Pro-Shop draw. The draw will be done before Christmas, and with 10 prizes the odds are very good. Squares are £10.00 each.
- Gifts & Vouchers - The personalised golf ball deal is still available. Purchase any dozen Titleist Golf Balls and get them personalised for free. We are also doing Pro-Shop and golf vouchers again this year if you are looking for present ideas.

From our Course Manager, Craig Earnshaw:
In November we have had 226mm of rain over the last two months, however, apart from some damp Greenkeepers, the golf course has held up well. We have only seen three white frosts to date. We have applied iron calcium and potassium based products to the greens which went down well and have helped to harden the turf throughout this period of increased disease. We applied a fungicide twice in November as the disease pressure is so high. The clearing of the woodland area to the right of the 3rd & 16th has begun and we can now begin to burn the cuttings which is a job for the really cold days. Leaf clearance has taken up a lot of the greenkeepers time but now most of the areas are now clear. Worm casts are an ongoing battle but we are in process of trying new products and will keep you updated with the performance.
Greens: A continued plan of Sarol rolling and slitting will be a priority to keep the moisture moving through the root zone. We will apply a turf tonic consisting of high iron and potassium thus keeping the cell walls strong and, hopefully, disease at bay. Greens height has stayed at 5mm and have been cut by hand. A very light topdressing will be applied twice in December.
Tees: The tees will have the blocks moved daily and the divots repaired. The height of cut will remain at 13mm. A deep tine will take place mid-month.
Fairways: Fairways will be brushed and cut to remove all the lateral growth. However, this can only be done in dry conditions.
Other:
- Some work around the new facility to take place.
- Machine maintenance and servicing to take place.
- Planning and ordering of irrigation parts for the 13th and 16th tees.
- Work to the 4th and 12th bridges to start this month.
As always, work is subject to weather conditions.
Should you have any questions regarding anything within this newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact me.
With a busy month coming up, I hope to see you all at the Club before the big day but if not, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the members a very Merry Christmas.
Best Regards,
Jack Slade
General Manager
